Top 5 takeaways of Northwestern’s 35-6 win over Ohio

After a third week of loss to Duke, Northwestern entered the game against Ohio looking to bounce back and return to the winning column. They bounced back, as the Wildcats beat Ohio Fashionably, 35-6. They improve to 2-2 on the season as they prepare for the start of the conference.

1. The precipitous attack from the northwest is deadly.

Led by the run back Evan shell, Northwestern directed the ball at will against the Ohio defense, totaling 373 rushing yards. Hull put in a monster performance today, collecting 216 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries. Not wanting to be left out, comrades ball carriers André Clair and Anthony tyus put up solid performance, carrying the ball for a total of 122 rushing yards and one touchdown on 19 carries. This rushed attack, when it starts, can be absolutely elitist and almost unstoppable at times.

2. Ryan Hilinski did what he was asked to do.

If you just read the score out of the box, the quarterback Ryan by Hilinski the last row of statistics might not sound too impressive to you. Finishing with 88 yards on 12-20 passing, Hilinski was not asked to do much today. When your running game totals 373 rushing yards, as a quarterback your life doesn’t get much easier as the pressure is taken off you and you can do what needs to be done to secure the victory.

3. Win the turnover battle, win the game

If you can win the turnover battle in any given game, it dramatically increases your chances of winning that week. Turnovers can build momentum, shorten the court for offense, and take your defense off the field and onto the sidelines for a breath. That was the case for the Northwest defense today as they counted three turnovers, two interceptions and a fumble recovery, leading to a good offensive field position and 14 runs scored on the turnarounds.

4. The Northwest Defense rebounds strongly.

Aside from a last-second touchdown, Northwestern’s defense was impressive today. After a 30-23 loss to Duke in which the defense allowed 558 total attacking yards, it remained to be seen how they would rebound against Ohio. They allowed 348 yards of total attacking, but a lot of those came after the game was pretty much out of reach as they limited them to just six points that day.

5. Build confidence before the conference.

With the resounding victory over Ohio, Northwestern’s non-conference program comes to an end. They went 2-1 against their non-conference opponents as they look to build momentum ahead of the conference game, looking to repeat themselves as the Big Ten West champions for the second year in a row. Yes, they were a lower Ohio team, but you can only beat who’s in front of you and wins like this are some serious momentum for a Northwestern looking to get back to the game for the. Big Ten title.
