Texas A&M Synchronized Run Game in Win Over Missouri

Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher has been talking all week about trap games. He didn’t want his Aggies to be overconfident and overlook Missouri based on recent events.
Fisher made his wish come true on Saturday in Colombia.
The No.21 Aggies (5-2, 2-2 SEC) had answers across the board for Missouri in a 35-14 win. A & M’s ground and impound attack licensed quarterback Zach Calzada slow down the game in the second half.
Fisher didn’t care that the Tigers (3-4, 0-3) placed dead last in the FBS to stop the race. The Aggies were determined to do what worked best.
âWe challenged them to start quickly,â Fisher said. “And we did.”
A&M appeared to have no problem standing up for Mizzou after the surprise 41-38 victory over No. 1 Alabama. The Aggies have gone back to basics, working between tackles and forcing defenders to clutter up the area.
Isaiah Spiller and Devon Achane both made minced meat from the Tigers’ top seven. Spiller escaped in the opening series for a win of 14. The next series, he sprinted almost unscathed on a 48-yard touchdown.
âIt was an early game (Saturday) and we didn’t want to go out and not be ready,â Spiller said. “We didn’t want to be a one-hit wonder.”
Achane’s speed was highlighted once again. Against Alabama, his 96-yard kickoff return touchdown brought the momentum back to A&M after a blocked punt.
This week it felt like a run for the American sprinter every time he had the ball. Achane had seven carries over 10 yards. During the team’s third series, he recorded four at least 15 runs before breaking free on a 20-yard touchdown to increase the lead to 21.
âWe started quickly, but we have to learn how to finish games,â said Spiller.
The Aggies have scored just seven points in the last two quarters. Calzada threw another interception on a pass intended for Achane on the goal line before half-time. A&M got off to a slow start at the start of the second half, allowing a 14 plays, 97 yards in the car helped by penalties.
So, yes, the Aggies have some work to do. Let’s look at the positives, however. Spiller, perhaps the SEC’s top runner, hadn’t rushed 100 yards since Week 3 against New Mexico. He finished with 168 against Mizzou.
Achane hasn’t hit triple digits since Week 1 against Kent State. He scored twice and totaled 129 yards. Both averaged over seven yards per carry, while the offensive line offered some great streaking.
The Aggies hope to put in a full performance – and avoid a trap – on Saturday against South Carolina at Kyle Field.
