Saints at Falcons: Falcons add exceptional preseason to active roster
The Atlanta Falcons announced on Saturday that they had transferred wide receiver Austin Trammell to the 53-man roster for Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints.
Trammell was with the Falcons in the preseason as an unsigned free agent. He was competing with Chris Rowland for a wide receiver position as well as a kick and punt return.
He looked good in camp this summer, but ultimately didn’t get a spot on the active roster after rookie Avery Williams blocked off punt return duties.
Trammell was a star for the Rice Owls. He made six touchdowns in 2020 when he only played three games.
He ended his career at Rice with 142 catches for 1,744 yards and 13 touchdowns and was named All-Conference USA in each of his four years.
The Falcons are in desperate need of wide receiver help this season after losing Julio Jones to a rally and Calvin Ridley has left the team after playing just five games.
Russell Gage has been playing much more efficiently lately once he put his early-season injuries behind him. He has collected at least 50 yards in six of the last seven games after breaking 50 yards twice in the previous 10 games.
After Gage, the production of the wide receiver position falls off a cliff. Olamide Zacchéaus has only amassed 359 yards in 16 games with eight starts. Ridley is still the Falcons’ third wide wide receiver, despite only playing five games in 2021.
Tight end Kyle Pitts and running back Cordarrelle Patterson were the next most effective players when flexed widely.
Trammell saw just one special teams snap last week against the Buffalo Bills after being sidelined from the practice squad, but is hoping for a bigger opportunity against the Saints.
