First born as a workplace doodle in a Warsaw office, a cartoon fox has conquered Iceland and now has its sights set on Sweden and beyond.

Invented by illustrator Weronika Lis, the adventures of her alter ego, Agent Fox, became cult in the northern hemisphere following the publication of Agent Fox in Iceland, a comic book inspired by her two years of life in the country. .

Tender, witty, playful and observant, the book has captivated natives and proven to be a big seller since its first publication in 2021.Weronika Lis

Speaking to TFN, Lis said: “I created Agent Fox when I was working in an advertisement in Warsawcreative agency – the job was great fun, but also stressful, and I found myself drawing the very first Agent Fox in 2014 somewhere between reading a new brief and being overwhelmed with my tasks.

Using Agent Fox as a way to relax from the pressures of her daily job, Lis first found herself sketching scenes of agency life with Fox at the center.

Celebrating the country’s many quirks and idiosyncrasies, Agent Fox in Iceland has garnered rave reviews, not only for its humor and positivity, but also for its portrayal of this enigmatic nation.Weronika Lis

“I would totally agree that I consider Agent Fox my alter ego,” she says. “He expresses my feelings, my plans, my dreams and whatever’s on my mind. But pretty much everyone at the agency also got their own character – I had a lot of fun doing that!

Eventually, however, Lis found herself hitting a wall in her professional life. “I felt that six years working in advertising was enough – I needed a break, which is why I chose to move to Iceland in 2017. I wanted something new and felt that I had to take a break from the ‘seriousness’ of life.”

Inspired by her new and foreign surroundings, Lis found herself bringing Agent Fox to life, but this time as an outlet through which she could express her experiences in a beautiful but confusing land.

“Iceland is so inspiring,” she says. “There are so many surprising things about this country that it was actually quite easy to come up with an idea for a comic.”

Describing his alter ego as “a little fox with a big heart”, what happened was a hand-drawn comic recording the challenges and adventures of his new life.

Tender, witty, playful and observant, the resulting book has captivated natives and proven to be a big seller since its first publication in 2021.

“Agent Fox always looks for the positives in any given situation,” Lis explains. “He believes in taking risks and trying new things, but he also takes great pleasure in the little things in life.”

Celebrating the country’s many quirks and idiosyncrasies, Agent Fox in Iceland has garnered rave reviews, not only for its humor and positivity, but also for its portrayal of this enigmatic nation.

“Even so,” Lis admits, “I’m totally shocked at how successful he’s been – maybe people recognize Agent Fox as a nice guy they want to hang out with!”

Now based in Gothenburg, Lis hopes Agent Fox in Sweden will debut this winter. And after that? “I think it’s a must for Agent Fox to appear in Polish,” she said. “In fact, I even started the first draft…”
