Metrasens launches the Metrasens Ultra™ detection system in the healthcare sector
“At Metrasens Ultra, we have focused on bringing a solution to market rather than just a product. The difference is that a solution represents a more complete response to the hospital’s needs in a holistic way and addresses to the needs of all stakeholders”Dr. Simon Goodyear, CEO

Metrasens, a recognized leader in advanced sensing technology for safety and security applications, today announced the launch of its next-generation sensing system, Metrasens Ultra™ with Xact ID™ intelligent sensing technology for availability in the healthcare security market.
Metrasens Ultra, with a limited release from 2021, has now reached nearly 1,000 systems deployed worldwide and has proven its effectiveness in both detection performance and design aesthetics, two key factors advocated by cross-functional management of hospitals.
The rise of violence in health care
The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) calls it “a deep-rooted weed that keeps growing.” According to a report by the American College of Emergency Physicians, 80% of emergency physicians say violence in health care has harmed patient care. Additionally, 50% say hospitals can do more by adding security features such as metal detectors and visitor screening.
Behind these figures are real people – friends, family, colleagues, neighbors – who have to deal with these acts of violence in their workplaces on a daily basis. The development of Metrasens Ultra took into consideration the many ways all of these people have been affected, including but not limited to gun violence.
Threats present in many forms, knives and edged weapons being the untold story alongside firearms
Violence is practiced in many forms – verbal and physical – with a weapon being used alongside some of the common forms. When it comes to defining a weapon, firearms get the most attention, and rightly so because of their deadly potential. Yet, in addition to guns, there are underlying threats that contribute significantly to the concerns of hospital leaders — and those are knives or other edged weapons.
A customer of Metrasens Hospital in the Midwest region of the United States reported the confiscation of thousands of knives over several months, after deploying a Metrasens product following two incidents involving stabbing. One of these incidents required life-saving surgery because of the use of the weapon.
“Metrasens believes that a comprehensive screening operation including people, process, and technology must be considered to combat all threats in a security-driven culture, such as a hospital or behavioral health hospital,” said Dr. Simon Goodyear, CEO of Metrasens. “We know that the solutions to these problems are not one-dimensional. They take an orchestration that includes smart technology like Metrasens Ultra, but also properly applied and trained usage.
Metrasens Ultra combines advanced screening technology + carefully defined screening processes + simple operation as the trio of success
Simply put, Metrasens Ultra makes people screening suitable for healthcare facilities by allowing facilities to remain open and useful rather than restricted and inaccessible, while maintaining appropriate aesthetics to feel appropriate for hospital environments.
Xact ID, Ultra’s unrivaled technology component, was developed with system intelligence that drives performance through advanced software algorithms, machine learning, and sensor design. This results in excellent detection capability for a full range of threat objects, including firearms, knives, razor blades and other concealable threat objects. All of this is accomplished in a sleek, slim design that requires a small footprint and no direct power source for flexible deployment in spaces often not designed for bulky security control systems. Being an intelligent system, Metrasens Ultra gains utility over time through software updates and upgrades. As threat detection needs change, so does Metrasens Ultra.
The technology is supported by carefully defined screening processes created in collaboration between Metrasens and customers. These processes take into account targeted threat profiles, space/environment considerations, and pedestrian traffic flow.
Using Metrasens Ultra by in-house or third-party security personnel is a breeze, with an intuitive user interface and easy-to-interpret area indication LEDs that indicate the location on the body where a threatening object is. detected, eliminating the guesswork and valuable time often wasted on secondary searches. Alert and operational activity data is automatically captured and stored for viewing on the user interface or uploading to a report for management.
“At Metrasens Ultra, we have focused on bringing a solution to market rather than just a product. The difference is that a solution represents a more complete response to the needs of the hospital in a holistic way and meets the needs of all stakeholders. That’s what we’ve done with Metrasens Ultra,” says Goodyear.
