Meet the tech-savvy freelance graphic designer making waves

There is a misconception that arty types cannot get acquainted with the tech world. But for Harkiran Kalsi, aka Harky, pictured above, the two are inseparable.
âFor my art, a combination of technology and creativity is essential,â says the Forest Hill-based designer, illustrator, letter artist and muralist.
âI got a degree in graphic design, which means you have to learn a lot of software and be tech-savvy. You are always thinking of ways to do things better. Our world is tech-driven – and you need to stay in control. “

Kalsi has overcome many obstacles in her path to become an excellent freelance writer. “I am of South Asian origin and people around me said that there was no money in the arts,” she recalls from a childhood where her mother, a brilliant painter, had transmitted âThe gene for artâ.
âI also had a hard time finding my type of art in college. Eventually she switched to graphic design and got a job in the public sector campaigning for councils and colleges in her native Warwickshire.
Kalsi became fully independent four years ago – and the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE 5G has become its technology of choice

Four years ago, she took the plunge and became fully independent. âI was petrified, but it was also exciting,â she says.
Her genius paid off: She worked almost non-stop for a range of top clients, from Foot Locker to agencies such as Pablo and Open Creates.
The hassle-free Galaxy Tab experience
The Galaxy Tab is a constant companion on the journey from digital ideas to finished works of art
/ Barnabas NewtonThe Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE 5G has become its main tool. âI probably do 90% of my work there now,â she explains. âI really like its ease of use. It’s fast, easy and intuitive. I also love the softness of the pen – it’s really natural, light and soft to the touch.
The Galaxy Tab experience also provides a desktop-like interface that makes it easy to take notes, sketch, annotate, sign, and scroll. âWhen I’m working on a sketch, it’s so easy to move layers. It’s very fluid and there are no problems, âshe says. And with her 5G capability, she can work on the go wherever she is.
As a designer herself, the aesthetics of the tablet are also appreciated. âIt’s very cool, and the screen is bright, with great colors. And it’s thin enough to fit perfectly in my bag.
