Last fall, MARTA passengers and potential passengers voted for the exterior design of the agency’s new cars. The “Minimalist: Option A” (pictured above) won by a narrow margin.

Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) riders have spoken. The agency unveiled Jan. 12 its exterior graphic design choices for the 254 Stadler rapid transit cars that will begin arriving in 2023.

During a month-long campaign last fall, voters could select one of four themed graphic options – “inspired by MARTA colors, the dynamism and movement of trains” – on the website of the agency or on social media pages.

The “Minimalist: Option A” design (pictured above) won 2,193 total votes, beating “Flowing Ribbons: Option A” by a narrow margin, which garnered 2,186 votes (below).

The most prominent feature of the “minimalist” design is at the front of the train, MARTA said, “where an illuminated ‘smile’ indicates the color of the respective train line – red, gold, green or blue – so that passengers know from a distance that their train is approaching.

MARTA’s three signature colors “flow in a stripe down the sides of the vehicles, bringing your gaze down the length of the train and highlighting the aerodynamic design,” the agency added.

Stadler landed the $646 million contract in 2019 and is expected to deliver all 254 cars by the end of 2028.
