Italian inspired restaurant by the best chef coming to Water Street Tampa
TAMPA, FL – A new restaurant concept from Proper House Group and Chef Ferrell Alvarez is coming to Water Street Tampa. Ash will offer Italian-inspired cuisine and have an expansive outdoor patio.
The team is also behind the famous restaurant Rooster & the Till in Seminole Heights, a recent winner of Michelin’s Bib Gourmand award.
Ash is slated to open in the spring of 2023 on the ground floor of Asher, the neighborhood’s newest residential development, joining Wagamama and Synovus, according to Water Street Tampa developers, Strategic Property Partners LLC.
“Proper House Group and Chief Ferrell Alvarez are industry veterans with a proven track record,” said Lee Schaffler, SPP’s portfolio manager. “Their concepts in Sparkman Wharf and Seminole Heights are incredibly successful, so we can’t wait to see them captivate the Water Street Tampa community as the neighborhood establishes itself as the city’s go-to dining destination.”
Covering 2,400 square feet of indoor dining space with an additional 1,000 square feet of outdoor dining space, Ash will be open for lunch and dinner seven days a week and will serve brunch in the future. The menu will feature concentrated yet fun cuisine with Italian accents.
Co-owned by Chef Ferrell Alvarez, 2017 James Beard Foundation Semi-Finalist; business partner and restaurateur Ty Rodriguez; and entrepreneur Chon Nguyen, Proper House Group is a Tampa-based hotel group known for its acclaimed restaurants in the Tampa Bay area.
The group has also partnered with its chief operating officer, Myles Gallagher, on this restaurant.
The new full-service restaurant marks Proper House Group and Alvarez’s third attempt at the mixed-use neighborhood, joining Gallito Taqueria and Dang Dude, which opened in Sparkman Wharf earlier this year.
In addition to Rooster & the Till, Proper House Group restaurants include Nebraska Mini Mart in Seminole Heights, Gallito Taqueria in The Joinery.
“As SPP partners with two current concepts at Sparkman Wharf, being able to bring Ash to life in Water Street Tampa is very humbling for us,” Alvarez said. “We look forward to sharing the company of other restaurants in the neighborhood and look forward to being a part of something special in our city. Our customers can expect to experience the same creative passion that has made Rooster & the Till a place so special in Seminole Heights.”

The restaurant’s name refers to the ash tree, a symbol of creative expression, productivity, strength and longevity, named after the SPP apartment building where the restaurant will be located.
Proper House Group is collaborating with Houston, Texas-based interior design studio Gin Design Group and Tampa-based graphic design studio Pep Rally Inc. on restaurant design and branding .
Led by founder Gin Braverman, Gin Design Group created an interior with arched lighting elements, an emphasis on the open kitchen, and a dining area crowned with a sculptural ash tree.
According to Pep Rally Inc., the logo design evokes nature with smooth lines that mimic tree branches reaching upwards, as well as an arch that serves as an ancient symbol of new beginnings. The warm, earthy colors of the logo refer to the terrazzo and the soft, backlit coves present in the interior design.
Ash will complement the growing retail landscape of Water Street Tampa, which will also house Predalina, Boulon Brasserie, Wagamama, The Pearl, Small Giant Bar & Restaurant, Wine on Water and MiniLuxe, as well as the currently open GreenWise Market, Chill Bros. Scoop Shop and Naked Farmer.
