First Half Analysis: Notre Dame v USC
Notre Dame leads USC 17-3 at halftime. Here are my thoughts on what we saw in the first half.
*** From a game plan / game call point of view, I was mostly satisfied in the first half. In fact, aside from some 13 staff near the goal line that resulted in a field goal despite being short, the game plan / game plan was outstanding.
*** This is what I wanted to see all season since the attack. Tempo, lots of RPOs (at least 10 so far), spreading the field in formation, distributing the ball and passing the ball to the playmakers in space. They reverse engineered the offense, using the pass to prepare for the race. Yes Tommy rees can continue like this while making some adjustments at half-time, the attack should continue to play well.
*** Quarterback Jack Coan was very effective in the first half. He makes quick decisions, gets the ball out quickly, makes precise throws in the fast play, he’s made some great decisions in the RPO game so far, and he’s been poise in the pocket. He fired a deep shot for Lorenzo Styles that prevented a big play from happening and he needs to shoot deep into the end zone to Michel mayer upper. Other than that, he was pretty good in the first half.
*** I loved that Rees called two assists with Tyler Buchner in the game.
*** The offensive line is hardly pushed in this game, but what I like is that they stay engaged. It’s the “keeping a body on a body” that I’ve been talking about all season. They also give quarterbacks plenty of time to pitch.
*** With the line getting bodies on USC defenders this made it possible Kyren williams find plenty of space to work. For example, on a 12-yard second quarter executed by Williams, right tackle Josh lugg was beaten on the inside, but he stayed engaged, put the guy on the ground late and it got Williams going and then taking off for a big win. Williams has shown great patience and when he commits he commits with authority.
*** Excellent first half of Lorenzo Styles, who did a great job getting off the line and then using fast play to get big plays. Kevin austin missed two big chances to play. He needs to do a much better job on the back shoulder throw than he let down in the first quarter and he looked away from the crossing road that prevented ND from converting a third down which created a failed placement. Austin blocked the perimeter very well, however.
*** It was an odd half-time for the defense, but ultimately they limited USC to three points, although poor late-half coaching decisions helped that.
*** Notre Dame drops a lot of eight in the cover in this game, and that allows Kedon Slovis to get into a decent pace sometimes. They’re also not really focused on slowing down. Drake London, who has 9 catches for 109 yards so far. Houston griffith and Clarence lewis both had huge missed tackles which gave London plenty of extra yards, but as the game progressed the defense did a better job of knocking him down after making the catch .
*** When Notre Dame brought back four, the defensive line was really impactful. The front is under a lot of pressure in these cases, which has led to multiple sacks and interception by Bo bauer who set up possession of the basket by the offensive. Going to four and sending Isaiah Foskey off the edge resulted in a sack on the first down that completely blocked USC’s second practice, which delayed USC, which ultimately led to the 3rd and 8th which resulted in the interception of Bauer.
*** I’m very curious to see if Marcus Freeman is doing more to bring a front to four or to use linebackers and racks to trigger more to add a fourth guy to the pass rush.
*** Lewis did a bad job in passing under London on the room where Kyle hamilton was injured. He was in a Cover 2 there, which meant he was staying under the sea but would have to keep climbing hard until he was threatened on the outside, but USC was running all the time. green on this side so he was never threatened. He has to climb hard and pass under this path, which would have prevented Slovis from putting the ball there.
