Community leader hosts NFT auction for workspace initiative
As a South Philly native seeks to continue fundraising for a local community center, he is now turning to the world of NFTs (non-fungible tokens) to help him achieve his goal.
Brandon Washington, educator and board member of the South of South Neighborhood Association, helped create 1901, a co-working space at SOSNA’s office at 1901 Washington Ave. that meets the technology needs of his neighborhood. Seeking to raise more funds for the hub, Washington will now auction NFTs he created using designs by his 4-year-old daughter, Ava.
“Due to the technological climate existing today, there is a strong opportunity for individuals to lift themselves out of poverty,” Washington said in a press release. “However, without the necessary resources and direction, such opportunities can be missed, and I hope to be able to provide this. Being a graphic designer myself, I believe there is an opportunity here to raise funds through the sale of NFTs.
Washington said he got the idea for the auction when he came across a story of an 8-year-old girl selling NFTs for millions of dollars, which prompted him to include her daughter in her latest fundraising initiative. He has since created an Instagram page, called “AvasAmazingArt”, which features five works by Ava that will eventually be auctioned off.
1901 currently offers high-speed Internet access, computers, and resources that provide training in how to use these tools. Since its inception, Washington has helped raise over $8,000 for the hub and, with the help of this NFT auction, will now seek to reach its new fundraising goal of $50,000. The money will be used to acquire better resources for the space and to develop a program that teaches individuals how to create their own NFTs.
“We live in a time where people are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on pixels,” Washington said. “You can create a design with virtually any digital device that has a screen. Now virtually everyone has the ability to create an inflow while using their creativity, and I want to help people do that by using this community center.
The first NFT will be available for purchase in June, and another will be auctioned each month thereafter.
