Chris McGroder turns 8 and shares his thoughts on
CONCORD, North Carolina, July 11. 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — When Chris and Pat McGroder purchased their Minuteman Press franchise in Concord, North Carolina in May 2014, they immediately set ambitious goals. Chris shares, “When we started, we bought an existing Minuteman Press store making barely $10,000 in revenue per month with just one employee. There were 3 key areas we focused on in the first year: hiring additional staff; identify equipment to be replaced/upgraded; and increase income.
She continues, “I also quit training with the goal of becoming a million dollar boutique. I remember asking training directors Dave Scadin and Pete Tagliano how fast someone did it. I don’t remember the exact answer, but this objective has always been a priority, not only for us, but for all the staff. We took the advice of our Field Rep and Regional VP (Dave Walton) to grow revenue through marketing calls, using FLEX for email campaigns and always looking for suggestive selling opportunities at our existing customers.
Today, after eight years in the business, Chris and Pat have successfully achieved their goals of becoming members of the Minuteman Press International President’s Million-Dollar Circle. Minuteman Press in Concord is located at 400-50 McGill Ave NW.
In addition to expanding products and services and following Minuteman Press’s marketing strategies, one of the primary avenues for growth is through strategic acquisitions. Chris says, “Our most successful growth milestones are attributed to acquisitions. In February 2016, we hired a salesperson and acquired his extensive business portfolio in the apparel industry. This propelled our growth in this business area and screen printing/embroidery grew to 30% of our business over the next 5 years. In October 2021, we acquired a large independent printer in Concord when that owner retired. In both cases, these acquisitions not only expanded the business with additional customers, but also expanded the types of products we could now provide to those customers. »
“We identified Concord Printing as our main competitor from the start. They had a very strong family business in Cabarrus County for over 50 years. One of the first things we did when we started was to list our competitors, which included Concord Printing and a few smaller independent print shops. Last fall, when we learned that the owner was planning to retire, we approached him with a plan to transition his clients to us. This acquisition had an immediate impact on our revenue and customers benefited from a seamless transition to a new print provider. -Chris McGroder
Create positive customer experiences and deliver personalized branded apparel
Chris shares the following ideas on how to provide a positive customer experience. In describing Minuteman Press at Concord to prospects, Chris shares, “We educate our customers and explain how we are a full-service commercial printer specializing in graphic design, print, signs and banners, branded apparel and merchandise. promotional. There are a few key areas that set us apart from our competitors: It all starts with exceptional customer service. Our customer-facing staff excel at making every customer feel important. Whether it’s a simple business card order or a complicated clothing order, every customer feels like an individual.
She adds, “Secondly, our production staff ensure quality results at every stage of the production process. We excel at delivering a wide range of products within the reasonable timeframes they demand. We often hear from our customers that they appreciate the convenience of being able to meet all their printing needs in one place.
For Minuteman Press at Concord, high demand products and services include “apparel (screen printed and embroidered), promotional products and large format products including signs, banners and labels,” according to Chris. “Our new customers who come in for traditional ‘ink on paper’ products are thrilled to hear that they can also get these additional items through us.”
She continues: “Our main growth sector continues to be apparel. Almost every business needs to equip their employees with some type of branded clothing. We have many opportunities to grow this part of the business just with our existing customer base. »
5 keys to growing the business
Chris shares the following 5 keys to making Minuteman Press in Concord, NC a million dollar business:
- “Customer service: Creation of a qualified and customer service oriented staff. It’s the first impression a customer has when he talks to us. Our philosophy is to do what we can to build and maintain such a strong relationship with each client that it would be difficult for them to want to go to a competitor.
- Always looking for additional opportunities to meet the needs of each client – asking questions and suggestive selling. (i.e. “Your logo looks great on that polo shirt you’re wearing! Are you happy with your current apparel supplier?”)
- Marketing and advertising: We actively participate in MMPI SEM programs, which makes Google our primary lead generator.
- Participation in BNI, Chamber of Commerce and other small local networking groups
- Actively engage in Minuteman Press functions such as regional meetings, conventions, Talk Minuteman, etc.
Background before the franchise and why the print is alive and well
Prior to purchasing Minuteman Press from Concord, Chris and Pat had some experience in franchising as well as other industries. Chris explains, “Prior to purchasing our Minuteman Press business, we were the franchisor of The Perfect Wedding Guide – a quarterly shopping guide for wedding and honeymoon services published in 65 cities across the United States. As franchisors, we knew the value of having a proven success model to ensure the success of our franchisees. »
She continues, “After selling Perfect Wedding Guide, we both went on to different careers that we were interested in at the time. Pat dove into real estate, opening a very successful brokerage office, and I pursued a Masters in Elementary Education and became a 4e class teacher.
Chris adds, “After four years of teaching, Pat convinced me that we should consider buying another business. He found the opportunity with Minuteman Press and we both saw the potential in the business. Knowing that virtually every business needs what Minuteman Press stores can offer, along with the support of a proven franchise system, made this an attractive business opportunity for us.
“The support we have received from Minuteman Press International has been integral to our success. Whether we need an answer or help from our Field Representative (currently Valerie Pinnock), Regional Vice President (Dave Walton) or Head Office, everyone is always responsive and helpful. Whether it was questions with FLEX, assisting with hiring, facilitating an acquisition, or getting involved in supplier or vendor issues, someone was always willing and available to step in. and help. -Chris McGroder
Chris also shares what it’s like to own a business in Concord. She shares, “Our community values doing business with local businesses and people are very loyal to local businesses that deliver a quality product delivered when promised. As business owners, we love getting to know our customers and developing those relationships. Our goal is to make doing business with us so easy and enjoyable that they don’t have to go anywhere else. We enjoy the business because it gives us the opportunity to interact with so many different types of businesses and every day brings new opportunities and challenges. »
As to why print remains popular with customers today, Chris explains, “I don’t think print will ever be phased out. I always feel that print has a stronger impression on the consumer than anything digital. It provides something tangible that the consumer can refer to later. I also think there’s a perception that a piece in print required more effort to get into the hands of the consumer, so there’s a higher perceived value for that message than, say, an advertisement that appears in your Facebook feed. With so much information received through so many channels (social media, email, television, radio), printed materials have greater memorability potential. Print helps reinforce the messages that consumers are bombarded with through digital methods. »
Rewards and tips for others
In addition to being a member of the President’s Million-Dollar Circle, Chris says, “The greatest personal reward is the ability to reward yourself for your own efforts. The greatest professional reward of owning this business is the opportunity to work with such a diverse group of businesses in Cabarrus County and play an important role in the community. We have relationships with many clients that go back 20 or 30 years. We are also proud of the fact that we have continued to grow and thrive during the pandemic. »
When asked what advice she would give to others right now, Chris replies, “Remember that you are in business for yourself, not by yourself. Surround yourself with the right people and use MPI’s knowledge and expertise.
She concludes with 3 things other business owners can do to be successful:
“1. Take every opportunity to engage with other owners and MPI staff. Get to know other owners with whom you can share ideas, successes and failures.
2. Set goals and make plans to achieve them. We set monthly, quarterly and annual targets each year and share these targets with our staff along with a bonus plan that rewards staff when these targets are achieved.
3. Always be ready to learn something new or add a new product line to your business. It’s so much easier to grow your business by offering more product options to your existing customers than trying to grow by only acquiring new customers. Listen to what your customers are asking for – if you have a lot of inquiries for something you don’t currently offer, consider it an opportunity for growth.
