Anna Broadhurst uses strong graphic shapes and retro colors to create stunning illustrations
After studying an MA in Graphic Design at London Met University and a BA in Design Practice at York St Johns, a future in illustration and design always seemed on the horizon for Anna. She even admits that as far back as she can remember, she has always enjoyed being creative.
“I’ve never been good with words, so being able to communicate ideas by drawing and making things has always been my priority,” Anna told Creative Boom. “Drawing and being creative is like therapy for me, so being able to do this for a living is a dream come true!”

Inspired by the strong forms and vivid colors of Petra Eriksson, Anna has channeled this influence into her work to create visually pleasing images. Yukai Du’s animation and illustration work is also an important influence. “Seeing how another illustrator has seamlessly integrated a unique animation style into her brand is hugely inspiring to me.”
As well as relying on strong graphic shapes with high contrast retro color schemes, Anna also enjoys playing with texture. She finds it a useful way to subtly layer colors to achieve the desired effect. And speaking of colors, Anna has an innovative way of settling into her palettes.
“I take inspiration from my surroundings, taking pictures of colors in the environment which I then try to simplify and create a palette,” she explains. “I love playing with color. The way it can affect emotions and bring out new feelings in the viewer fascinates me.”

Another characteristic element of Anna’s illustrations is scale, which is emphasized when people are reduced to tiny size. “I’ve always had a weird fascination with the little things, and I think it started from there,” she reveals.
“I put a little person in an image and realized it could change the meaning of the objects around it. It’s a fun way to play with surrealism and create new meanings in my work. “
Unsurprisingly, Anna is in demand. Currently, she is completing a commission for Selfridges Group for a new sustainability section on their website. “I had the chance to work on both illustration and animation, so it was great to work on it,” she adds. “My current personal project is a range of dog-themed animated greeting cards using augmented reality!”
